Obtaining Needed Equipment for Your Disability

If you have a disability, the chances are good that you need equipment to make it easier to live and work with that disability. Unfortunately, equipment designed for those who have disabilities can be incredibly expensive, and unaffordable by many. However, you need to realize that in many cases, there are options open to you that will help you to actually acquire the equipment that you need.

Start with your medical insurance. Insurance companies will seldom point out to you what they will and will not pay for. You have to read your policy and ask the questions yourself. For example, if you’ve suffered an injury, or have a disability that requires the use of a wheelchair, even if your insurance will pay for that wheelchair, the insurance company isn’t going to notify you that they will pay for it – it’s up to you to find out for yourself.

If the insurance company will not pay for the equipment that you need, move on to the next source. Does the disability have any organizations associated with it, such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)? If so, you may be surprised to find that the organization will supply you with all of the equipment that you need, at no cost to you. If not, they may be able to connect you with great resources to obtain acceptable used equipment at a fraction of the cost.

This brings us to the next option. Purchase used equipment when possible. Check your local paper and online resources, such as Craig’s List and EBay to find quality used equipment that you need to live better with your disability. You will be amazed at what is available to you. Just be sure to use caution when making high dollar purchases, and use an escrow service instead of just sending money to individual people.

Finally, if there are no other options open, consider renting or leasing the equipment from a medical supply store. In the long term, this will be more expensive than making an outright purchase in most cases, but if it is currently the only option open to you, you can use this option while you try to find another option that will work for you in the future. Also be aware that many medical supply companies sell used equipment as well, and some may have a lease/purchase option as well.

Don’t give up. You will find the equipment that you need to make it easier to live with your disability, as long as you keep looking. Also, let it be known that you need the equipment by contacting your church and any organizations that you belong to as well, as money could be donated to help you acquire what you need.
