I have a question about adopting a special needs child?
I was just wondering, some children with disabilities require a lot of special medical equipment and services that may be vital to their survival or to provide them with the best quality life, but often these things are extremely expensive. Do people who adopt children with such needs get help paying for all the medical equipment and other things the child may need? Or do they have to have the money to pay for a lot of the things themselves? Like say a child who was quadriplegic and needed a ventilator and other equipment for survival…
I’m not planning to adopt one now, I’m pregnant with my first baby currently. I was just curious. I’m thinking of adopting a child with special needs sometime in the future though.
The answer kind of depends. Private adoptions sometimes do not have any help with this stuff. However, adoption through foster care there is usually help for this stuff. We have 8 adopted children all with special needs. One of our daughters is fed through a G-tube and is wheelchair bound. Her medical is covered (what our insurance doesn’t cover) and some of her supplies are covered. Things like our van conversion and house changes we have had to make for her are not covered but her wheelchair was paid for by her medical. There is a subsidy to help with her extra expenses but it is not expected to cover everything. Most state agencies will help with things to help a special needs child get a home but their budgets are limited (especially now.) It is still a great rewarding experience to have a differently-abled child in your life. Good luck in your future endeavors.
